Why buy recycled paper products?
Customers who desire to live a more sustainable lifestyle, should look closely at the production of paper products. According to Green Seal, an environmental certification group, the pulp and paper industry ranks first in the use of industrial process water, third in toxic chemical releases and fourth in emissions of air pollutants known to impair respiratory health.
The Federal Network on Sustainability reports that the US pulp and paper industry is the second largest consumer of energy and uses more water to produce a ton of product than any other industry. The US paper industry also relies heavily on chlorine-intensive bleaching to produce white paper. This bleaching process creates a highly toxic, cancer producing organochloride called dioxin which impacts the reproductive and immune systems of wildlife and people and significantly pollutes our waterways.
Unfortunately, more than 90 percent of the printing and writing paper made in the U.S. is from virgin tree fiber. Citizens of North America consume more than 660 pounds of paper per year. Globally, paper consumption has more than tripled over the past 30 years.
While these facts regarding the paper industry seem dire, there is a sustainable choice that consumers can make which is to buy paper products made with 100% recycled paper content. Here it is important to note that not all recycled paper is created equal. The term post consumer waste (PCW) is vital; this is the used paper we all take to the recycling center. Contrasted to this is pre-consumer waste which is paper that is produced from virgin fibers, but never used as an end product and then is remade into a commercial product.
When buying recycled paper, look for the product which has the highest post consumer waste (PCW) content as this type will embody the most significant water and energy savings. This paper has already been processed once and so can be recycled using fewer than a dozen nonhazardous chemicals and bleaching solutions.
Producing recycled paper requires about 60 percent of the energy used to make paper from virgin pulp. Producing recycled paper causes 74% less air pollution, 35% less water pollution and creates five times the number of jobs than producing virgin paper.
The One Stop Sustainability Shop carries office paper products from two companies: The Sustainable Group based in Seattle and the New Leaf Paper Company of San Francisco. We stock notebooks, steno pads, legal pads and premium copy paper that are 100% post consumer waste and processed chlorine free. We also have folders, envelopes, copy paper, tab dividers, CD holders, and mailers which are 85% PCW and processed chlorine free. While many of these products say they are 100% recycled content, not all are 100% PCW content. Until consumer demand increases, finding paper with 100% PCW will continue to be a challenge.
Recycled steel paper clips, recycled content kraft wrapping paper, sticky notes and cellulose pens are other sustainable office products we have available.
